Here's a sentence nobody expected to write in 2025: there are men in Ohio, Texas, and Oregon paying $150 a pop to have a stranger talk them through standing naked in front of twelve other guys.

It's called body-positive mirror coaching, and if you're picturing something out of a late-night comedy sketch, you're not entirely wrong. But after talking to facilitators and attendees, there's something here that's less gimmick and more group therapy with a dress code of zero.

What Actually Happens in a Session

The typical workshop runs two to three hours in a rented yoga studio or a retreat space that smells faintly of sage. Everyone starts clothed. There's a check-in circle, some ground rules — no comments on bodies unless invited, no phones, no exceptions — and then the slow, excruciating disrobing that one attendee compared to "getting a root canal in front of your coworkers."

The facilitator's job isn't to hype anyone up. It's to narrate. When a guy freezes in front of the full-length mirror that anchors every session, the coach asks him to describe what he sees out loud. Not what he hates. Just what's there. Shoulders. A scar from a childhood bike accident. The belly he's been at war with since college.

"The first time a guy says 'I have a body' instead of 'I have a problem,' that's the whole ballgame," says Dana, a facilitator in Austin who runs weekend intensives for men aged 28 to 60-something.

The Money Question

Pricing varies wildly. Drop-in sessions run $40 to $75. Full weekend retreats in places like Joshua Tree or upstate New York can hit $600 to $900, lodging included. Some facilitators offer sliding scales, and a few have started taking FSA-adjacent arguments to employers — with mixed success.

Is that steep? Sure. But compare it to the therapy-adjacent industry it's quietly competing with. A single session with a licensed therapist in a major metro can run $200 with insurance doing half the work. The workshop pitch is simple: you can't talk your way into body acceptance while wearing gym shorts and a hoodie. At some point, the clothes have to come off and somebody has to be in the room.

Does It Stick?

This is where the honest answers get interesting. Attendees we spoke with split into two camps.

The skeptics-turned-believers describe a lasting shift — the guy in Portland who finally stopped turning sideways in every photo, the dad in Denver who stopped making fat jokes about himself before anyone else could. "I did the workshop in March. It's October and I still haven't looked away from a mirror first," one attendee told us.

The cynics say the glow fades fast. One guy described it as "a bender for your self-esteem — great weekend, back to normal by Tuesday." Several mentioned needing a repeat session or a monthly group to keep the momentum, which, conveniently, the facilitators offer. Draw your own conclusions about the business model.

Why Guys Are Showing Up At All

The demographic isn't who you'd guess. It's not gym rats looking for validation. It's divorced dads, recently single 30-somethings, and middle-aged men who realized they hadn't been seen without a shirt by another human in a decade. Several mentioned the same trigger: a doctor's appointment, a beach vacation, a partner's comment that landed harder than intended.

There's also the simple fact that American men have almost no spaces left where vulnerability is on the menu. The locker room is dying. The bar doesn't count. The group chat definitely doesn't count. A naked workshop is, weirdly, one of the few rooms where nobody's performing.

"You can't be cool when you're naked," one facilitator told us. "That's the point. The mask doesn't fit when there's nothing to hide it behind."

Worth It?

If you're expecting a magic fix, save your money. But if you've spent years negotiating with your own reflection and losing, there's something to the idea that the fastest route past the shame is through it — witnessed, narrated, and surrounded by other guys doing the exact same thing.

Just maybe check the reviews first. This industry is young, unregulated, and attracts its share of people with more enthusiasm than training. Look for facilitators with backgrounds in somatic work or actual counseling, and be wary of anyone promising transformation in ninety minutes.

The body you've got isn't going anywhere. Turns out a lot of guys are willing to pay to finally make peace with that fact — and for some of them, the strangest room in America is where it finally happens.
